Race & Ethnicity Project

Race & Ethnicity in Advertising
America in the 20th Century

The AEF has undertaken a ground-breaking project that explores the history of diverse populations and consumers in the United States. With Race & Ethnicity in Advertising – America in the 20th Century, AEF is developing the definitive online exhibition about how American experiences of race and ethnicity have shaped and been shaped by the evolution of advertising over the course of the 20th century. This online exhibit and archives includes images and scholarly essays that will serve as an extensive resource for teaching, research, industry and anyone who is interested about this continuously evolving subject in American history. Nothing like this exists in our industry today!

Fath Davis Ruffins, Curator and Historian, The Smithsonian Institution, is our Project Director.
